Grow Your Own Veggies - Harpins at Ackworth Garden Centre - West Yorkshire

There is nothing more satisfying than growing your own veggies. Not only are they so much tastier than naything you can buy in the shops, but they’re also much cheaper. And also who right now can actually find any of your five-a-day in the supermarkets at the minute…. SO here we have collated our team’s top ten tips for growing veg.

  • #1 Choose veg you actually like. Sounds obvious but a surprising number of people don’t usually consider this when they get growing!

  • #2 Plant veg sucessionally. That is don’t choose five things which will all be in season at the same time. By choosing a mixture of veggies and seasons you can live off your plot for much longer.

  • #3 Plants need only three things. Light, water and feed. If you give them all three we promise it can’t go wrong.

  • #4 Plants are your friends. So remember to check they’re ok too! By keeping an eye out you can make sure that they aren’t getting ill or being affected by pests.

  • #5 If you’re growing tomatoes take note of whether they’re a cordon or bush type. Cordons will require a little training on a cane or similar, whereas bush tomatoes can be left to roam free in a container.

  • #6 Keep your distance. Every pack tells you how far apart to plant each one. By preventing overcrowding you will great bigger and healthier veg.

  • #7 Growing strawberries in containers can help keep them away from slugs and snails who are also big fans of the fruit.

  • #8 Use plant labels. If you write on the variety and you find you love it, you’ll know which one to buy again next year.

  • #9 Grow carrots between onions and shallots to prevent carrotfly. Or alternatively, grow them in pots or raised beds a few feet of the ground as the flies can’t fly that high!

  • #10 Be proud. You have just created your own food. You are a hunter-gatherer. You are the bees knees.
